Fixing a Leaky Shower Faucet

If you have a leaky shower faucet you will want to get it fixed not only is it annoying to listen to but it is also wasting more water than you might expect. Frequently a shower faucet leaks because of the washers within the handle. Sometimes the washers are poor quality, sometimes they are the wrong size, and sometimes they just wear out. Here are a few tips to fix a leaky shower faucet:

  • Shut off the water supply to the shower.
  • Drain any remaining water out of the leaky shower faucet by turning the shower on.
  • Remove the shower faucet handle by unscrewing it from the wall.
  • Unscrew the nut that is holding the stem in place.
  • Unscrew the shower stem (counterclockwise).
  • Replace any rubber washers or gaskets on the shower stem as well as the packing washer at the middle of the shower stem.
  • Clean any deposits or dirt particles that might be on the pipes and then replace the parts in the reverse order from which you removed them.
  • Turn the water back on and test for any leaks.
